Pharaohs, Maris, and Sesostris did
to task their subjects to build
unnecessary pyramids, obelisks,
labyrinths, channels and lakes,
gigantic works all, to divert
them from rebellion and riot
Today new lords and officers created
tomorrow of some great men deposed
and then again of fresh honours conferred
one is let loose, another imprisoned
one purchaseth, another breaketh
he thrives, his neighbour turns bankrupt
Now plenty, then again lack and famine
one runs, another rides, wrangles, laughs, weeps
Fire, and hail, and famine, and dearth,
all these are created for vengeance
Are you shaken with wars?
Are you molested with dearth and famine?
Is your health crushed with raging diseases?
Are you tormented with epidemical maladies?

Jordan Vauvert
